Owner’s Task:
To construct a 16 acre cell for non-hazardous waste; adjacent to the existing active landfill, without disrupting the daily Evergreen landfill operations. Potential problems with leachate/waste seepage from existing landfill encroaching into new cell.
Shamrock Solution:
Started by excavating 280,000 cy of soil to create the new cell and then lining the cell floor with one foot of clay. Then followed by mitigating groundwater conditions while controlling seepage from the existing cell. Next, installed 500,000 sf of HDPE and geosynthetic clay liners on challenging 2:1 slopes. Installed 3,000 lf of leachate collection piping and encased in 20,000 tons of drainage stone. Constructed new leachate pump station and assisted the Owner with a new design for the update of their force main and treatment system.
Benefit to the Customer:
The landfill cell was completed ahead of schedule during COVID pandemic, with minimal disruption to daily operations. Shamrock aided with design of the outdated leachate collection and pumping system to improve efficiency and bring the system up to current standards.
